TotalEnergies in Angola
Operator · 40% · 70+ Years in Angola · 7 FPSOsOverview — Angola's Deepwater Pioneer
TotalEnergies has been present in Angola for over 70 years, making it one of the longest-established international oil companies in the country. The French energy major operates the Kaminho project with a 40% working interest, partnering with Petronas (40%) and Sonangol (20%) in Block 20/11.
TotalEnergies' Angola journey spans from onshore beginnings to Block 3 offshore, then pioneering deepwater with the Girassol FPSO on Block 17 (Angola's first deepwater development), through to Block 32 (Kaombo) and the ultra-deepwater frontier of Block 48, where the company recently set a world record drilling at more than 3,600 meters water depth. The FPSO Kaminho will be TotalEnergies' seventh FPSO operating in Angolan waters.
Angolan FPSO Fleet
TotalEnergies operates a formidable fleet of FPSOs in Angola, primarily on Blocks 17 and 32. The fleet includes: Girassol (Block 17, online 2001 — Angola's deepwater milestone), Dalia (Block 17), Pazflor (Block 17), CLOV (Block 17), Kaombo North (Block 32), and Kaombo South (Block 32). The FPSO Kaminho will join as the seventh vessel in 2028. TotalEnergies also continues development on existing assets — Begonia Phase 3, CLOV extensions, and Dalia/Pazflor optimization — to offset the approximately 10% annual natural decline from mature fields.
Kaminho — Opening a New Basin
TotalEnergies acquired interests in Blocks 20/11 and 21/09 from Sonangol in December 2018 for $400 million, plus $100 million at FID and contingency payments capped at $250 million. The acquisition gave TotalEnergies access to the pre-salt discoveries originally made by Cobalt International Energy. Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO, stated at FID: "Building on our pioneering spirit and our long-term partnership with Angola, we are pleased to launch the Kaminho project along with our strategic partners. This project leverages innovation to fit with our investment criteria — breakeven under $30/b and carbon intensity of 16 kg CO2e/boe."
The Kaminho project also includes a Memorandum of Understanding between TotalEnergies and Sonangol EP to share expertise on R&D, particularly decarbonization, methane emissions reduction, and renewable energies. TotalEnergies will support Sonangol's Sumbe R&D center and develop capabilities in reservoir geology, process electrification, and photovoltaics.
Ongoing Exploration
TotalEnergies continues exploration on Block 20/11, including the Grenadier-1 well drilled by the Valaris DS-12 drillship in 1,500 meters water depth — approximately 10 km from the Golfinho discovery, likely targeting a similar pre-salt carbonate structure. Further appraisal of the Lontra and other discoveries could define additional development opportunities in the Kwanza Basin beyond the initial Kaminho scope.
